Mr. Sold Out Presents | Jay-Z Album Reviews 9: The Blueprint 2 – The Gift & The Curse

Welcome back to the Mr. Sold Out album review of Jay-Z, the first artist in the Legend Series.  Our panel ranked Kingdom Come as #11, Vol. 3 The Life and Times of S. Carter at number ten, and now at #9, The Blueprint 2 – The Gift & The Curse …

# 9 The Blueprint 2 – The Gift & The Curse (Released November 12, 2002 on Rocafella/Def Jam)

After achieving critical acclaim for his Blueprint album, Jay-Z took on the personal challenge of making a double album.  A double album is one accolade that Jay-Z had yet to venture into while both Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. had cemented their legacy with classic double albums of their own before passing.

Consensus Score

(Each panelists ranked albums from best to worst with 1 being the best and 11 being the worst.  Consensus score is based on the average score of the panelist.  This album only made one panelist Top 5)
High Points
Hearing Jay-Z, Rakim, and Dre on the same track was dope. (Jay blacks out on that verse) I also appreciated Kanye West’s verse on “The Bounce” – Chief Chilla
Favorite Tracks
A Dream, Meet the Parents, All Around the World, Show You How (Bonus Track), Hovi Baby
Low Points
–Felt there was too many mediocre tracks, should have cut some and consolidated into one CD.  Perhaps too many meaningless features. – C Andall
Worst Tracks
As One, What They Gonna Do, Some People Hate
Overall Thoughts
Blueprint 2 is one that I struggled with rating. As a whole, it was lack luster but The Curse could have been one of Jayss greatest bodies of work. The high point and my favorite song is “Meet The Parents.” This song is arguably Jay’s greatest and one of the greatest storytelling songs ever. “You Must Love Me” will also be in the debate. I actually wrote a paper my sophomore  year in college about “Meet The Parents,” the Stanhood is real. – Queen Bobbi
